Making Waves ABCs

In 2008, Four Bands launched the Making Waves program to replace poverty and unemployment with financial literacy and entrepreneurship.

The Making Waves program promotes the ABCs of Financial Literacy and Entrepreneurship®-key behaviors that people can incorporate into their lives to: 1) build and support private businesses,
2) become better stewards of money, and 3) expand assets rather than debts.

Financial Literacy ABCs: Assess Spending, Build Credit and Create Assets
Entrepreneurship ABCs: Assess Options, Build Experience, and Create Markets

Learn more about the ABC key behaviors.

Objectives:
The “first wave” of the program on the Cheyenne River Indian Reservation includes two objectives:

Objective 1 - 90 teachers in grades K-12 schools will integrate financial literacy and entrepreneurship lessons into core classes. This work will instill knowledge and skills youth need to make effective choices about their money and open doors for new job opportunities. It will build the 7th generation of wave makers!

Objective 2 - 12 community organizations will take actions as part of a Making Waves Campaign and change 4 policies or practices on the Reservation inhibiting financial literacy or entrepreneurship. This work will start a wave of financial literacy and entrepreneurship!

Become a Wavemaker:
Four Bands challenges residents and businesses on the Cheyenne River Indian Reservation to sign our Wavemaker Pledge Card and take actions that promote financial literacy and entrepreneurship. And as you ride the wave, encourage others to follow in your wake!

Four Bands is initially implementing this program on the Cheyenne River Indian Reservation. We will then take the program out to Native American communities, and other interested communities across the country. People from all walks of life will hear stories of what Lakota families have done to make their money matter and keep their dollars working at home by supporting local business. They will learn about our Wavemakers.

Making Waves is part of Four Bands' Wicoicage Sakowin kin un Wicakagapi (Building for the Seventh Generation) project. All materials are property of Four Bands and may not be reproduced or distributed without permission. The project is supported by the Administration for Native Americans.
