From the Ground Up: Barndominium Housing

Barndominium Building!

Shayna and Kash Deal spent several years moving between rentals or house-sitting for family while deciding where they wanted to settle. During that time, one dream remained constant for them—building a home from the ground up.

While living in a rental for three years, they begin exploring how to make their dream a reality. Traditional bank financing, with high interest rates, felt out of reach. That’s when they connected with Four Bands Community Fund. With affordable interest and guidance through the lending process, building their own home became realistic.

“It’s always been a dream of mine to build our own house from scratch,” Shayna shared.

The construction of their dream home began in early 2023 with a barndominium-style design. The Deals had friends to help them do the drywall and for painting, while local contractors handled the plumbing, electrical and the finish work. Throughout the loan process, loan disbursements were handled smoothly by email, allowing the project to move forward. One of the most memorable moments was when the walls started going up—just days before welcoming their second child.

“When we could finally walk through it and imagine what it would be like, that’s when it got really exciting.”

The Deals officially moved into their new home in April 2024, only a year after construction started.

Today, the greatest reward is peace of mind. “We’re glad that we are in our home and that there are no surprises–we know what we have to pay every year and it’s manageable. Peace of mind is the best thing for us because we’re not renting anymore and every dollar we put towards the house brings us a day closer to owning it and being debt free.” Now that they are no longer renting, they can build equity and stability for their family.

Shayna’s advice to potential homeowners is this:

“Don’t rush. Make sure that you have exactly what you want before you move forward with the process. Advocate for yourself and your wants and family needs.”

Now, behind their four barndominum-style walls is more than a finished house. It’s a foundation built with intention, teamwork, and the belief of homownership is possible.
